Why WordPress needs to become an AI-First Platform

There are ongoing debates about who WordPress should serve—whether it should prioritize beginners, developers, or enterprises—but in my view, much larger forces are at play that will render these discussions obsolete sooner than we think.

Currently, WordPress is primarily a content management system (CMS) and website builder, but in the next three years, it must evolve into something far more significant.

WordPress must become the central infrastructure for digital content, transcending its role as just a website builder.

WordPress must be the platform that connects different types of users—content creators, developers, businesses, and marketers—by offering AI-driven tools that cater to their specific needs.

This means building an AI-first ecosystem where automation, predictive analytics, and real-time content adaptation become standard features.

For WordPress to thrive in an AI-driven world, it needs to change in fundamental ways. It’s not just about adding AI tools—it’s about reimagining WordPress as a smart, adaptable platform.

The future of the web is one that blurs the lines between websites and web applications, and WordPress needs to transform itself quickly so it can lead this charge.

Below are the key areas that I believe need to be built to make this vision a reality.

1. AI as the Primary Interface

Imagine a WordPress platform where AI is the primary interface for user interactions. Instead of navigating complex dashboards and settings, users could simply describe their needs, and AI would handle the rest. AI could set up new sites, configure plugins, design layouts, and manage content, making WordPress more intuitive and accessible than ever.

2. AI-Driven Built-in Editing

AI-powered editing could revolutionize content creation by integrating real-time suggestions directly into the platform. Users could edit their WordPress sites through an AI-powered interface, eliminating the need for wp-admin. AI could also offer smart formatting recommendations, automate internal linking, and suggest media elements to enrich posts and pages.

WordPress could incorporate a powerful AI-driven code editor within its platform. AI-driven collaboration tools would allow users to invite teammates, assign roles, and work together in real-time. AI-assisted task management could optimize workflows by suggesting task prioritization, monitoring progress, and automating repetitive project management tasks.
